Gyroscope 03:50
lyrics by Ethan Nickerson music by The Mines There is a stone It sits like a treasure in a field Its power alone Can balance the world, and keep it healed I thought that I’d find my life Perched atop a slippery slope, But here on the ground, my eyes, They behold a gyroscope And I don’t want ‘nothing more than to live on, But what is that living for with all this wrong? I must be out of my mind to put all my faith in you, But no brick that I find can do what this stone can do There is a stone There is a way There is a way before us all, And most of my day Is spent on the ground, learning to crawl, But I’ve got a pulse again, And I am not without hope I fell on the stone, I broke in, And now I’m a gyroscope Chorus And when I’m tired, it’s in my face, you see it My heart in chains, and I need to free it Another time, another place, we’ll flee it We have to fight, we’ll alight, alight, alight... There is a stone There is a stone There is a stone There is a stone

Wired Eyes 02:53
lyrics by Greg Lockwood music by The Mines In a chair, in a place. Absent all. In my way, on my face... Almost over. Dark beneath a cloudy moon, Add the feeling of coming doom, Across the ocean. And on this dreary night, In a wild fight, Bones are broken... And today. At this hour. I'm wired eyes, and the storm is over And today, At this hour There's a light on. The chitter chatter, awakening. Open eyes viewing everything, Overloaded... A hard left to the faces, Holding down on the pavement, They work me over. And today. At this hour. I'm wired eyes, and the storm is over And today, At this hour There's a light on.

Ana Flora 02:58
lyrics by Ethan Nickerson music by The Mines Ana Flora, I’m waking up Been dragging this load, it’s time to let go Ana Flora, I’ve lost enough ‘Cause nothing I own Will silence the voices and lies that no one cares, And that thing in me replaying the past in my eyes that strips me bare So gather your things, it’s time we were off Ana Flora, I know you’re tired But you just hold on, cause we’re almost home Ana Flora, the shots were fired The damage was done Now it’s like the whole world is lost in disarray, I can’t see the signs, so I’ll have to close both my eyes to see the way And follow the sounds that carry us there Like an ocean At its deepest part Split wide open, Oh your sweet, sweet heart Ana Flora, we’re almost there I can tell by the sound, the light through the haze Ana Flora, the morning air, We’re touching the ground And leaving the maze of our stone, cerebral fate The holy complete, restoring the lost and the broken hearted state Escaping the sleep, escaping the past in my eyes, The past in my eyes, Oh, the past in my eyes ©2006 The Mines

Ground Floor 02:16
lyrics by Greg Lockwood music by The Mines Black light pulses on black walls purple dim haze, I'm amazed. Remembering the days but the innocence fades... Tell me why, Nothing lasts forever. Why I can't keep it all together. Why? Why? Brother, listen to this state of the union, I am of the opinion that I need to get paid. I Spend my time on the ground floor running, And I need to get paid. Tell me why, Nothing lasts forever. Why I can't keep it all together. Why? Why? How will I know when I've made enough? How will I know if I've made enough, to survive? All I know is I've not made enough yet. When will I know if I've made enough?
5.
lyrics by Ethan Nickerson music by The Mines Is this what it means, to be thankful? Is this what it means to let go? Is this what it means, to be grateful? Is this what it means to have soul? To be sanctified, through your holy life, And finally find my role. Is this what it means, to be living? Is this what it means to be whole? Oh, sunlight, where I am is where I am, I couldn’t ask for much more. ‘Cause something ain’t right, with who I am, but who I am Is being reborn. Is this how it feels, to be waking? Is this what it’s like to take hold? Is this paradise, in the making? Is this what it’s like to find gold? And no dark of night, and no pain of death, Can ever make me old. Is this how feels, to touch heaven? Is this what it’s like to unfold? Chorus Is this what it means, to be living? Is this what it means to have soul? Chorus Oh the peace can sure fight, it carries on and carries on, It never dies or gets worn. My home is in sight, but where I am, is where I am, I think I’ll stay and explore.

Compass 03:50
lyrics by Ethan Nickerson music by The Mines I need to retrace my steps before the light fades, If only to find my way back to the start The heart of the deep, the jungle won’t sleep for pity’s sake The night starts to creep, There’s more than my sanity at stake Then I fall into a garden in the moon, And the jungle starts to fade Here the air hums with a soft, atomic tune, I can feel it as it’s played Fortify your borders, Line the streets for war Children run for safer quarters, Barricade the door Chorus I’ve seen this place before within my mind, But still I never knew its name I can’t escape the war within mankind, But I can fight it all the same

Better Way 04:14
lyrics by Greg Lockwood music by The Mines I'm willing to die today... I wish that's what I could say. That I'm standing in harms way... But the truth is I'm not. I'm sitting in a chair going nowhere, I hear the rumble of the action over there. My cupboards are full. My senses are dull. Life's a straight line. I hear a better way. In my heart I know there's gotta be one. My fear, as dark as the night. In my heart I know there's gotta be one. I'm willing to die today... The root of it all. The choice is mine to make To put up a wall. And put the orchard over there, the beach where grass is bare, the sidewalk to the guesthouse just to show you that I care. I'll send out the cards, to those I'll invite in, Yes I'll be delighted to show you around. I hear a better way. In my heart I know there's gotta be one. My fear, as dark as the night. In my heart I know there's gotta be one. Am I willing to die, die for justice Willing to die, die for the future Am I Willing to die, for the people that matter to you Giving myself up to you, to the truth, to be used... Am I willing to die today? Just wondering what I would say. If I'm standing in harms way. My hope is I'll try! I hear a better way. In my heart I know there's gotta be one. My fear, as dark as the night. In my heart I know there's gotta be one.

Satellite 03:07
lyrics by Ethan Nickerson music by The Mines Beyond the patterns and the poetry Beyond the characters and scenes that never change There’s more than karma watching over me, But all the details leave me feeling kind of strange Another night, walking the streets of outer space A satellite, doomed to repeat and doomed to trace The crack of morning cuts inside the eye The pulse continues though the flesh is dry And it’s kind of like an arrested heart, Where something must be wrong, But deeper in we find a part That cries another song Another night, walking the streets of outer space A satellite, doomed to repeat and doomed to trace But something isn’t right, there’s something I can’t exactly place Hold me to the light, so I can finally end this chase The streets are crying out for something more, But I’m a vagrant begging for some change We need some kind of hero for the poor, But who? Beyond the patterns and the poetry Beyond the characters and scenes that never change...

lyrics by Ethan Nickerson music by The Mines On the mountain between love and war, we watch men break before they bend In the streets iron walls start to climb, we watch them rise and fall again Why do ghosts from the past haunt us still? And why can’t we escape the lie? For this hunger that blood cannot fill, there’s so much more that we deny People made of dust, given a breath we can’t repay Bodies lost to rust, but given another chance to stay, to stay In the sweetness of new life we find, that to create is to be made In the moments that we can’t define, we see the life that we betrayed... People made of dust, and given a breath we can’t repay, Bodies lost to rust, but given another chance to stay As the dawn appears, the smoke and the darkness clears away Underneath the ice, the pulse of the garden starts to play, to play, to play, to play Where the feast won’t end, let your grace extend, my Lord I am home to stay. Where there is no fear, let the weak draw near, my Lord I am home to stay.

Casanova 02:34
Casanova lyrics by Greg Lockwood music by The Mines "It's like breaking in, taking it. It's like breaking in, you'll find out. You don't wait until you have permission, you just go breaking in, you'll find out." Casanova is looking over. Setting his sights on a future star. A friends advice, this intruder. And now he's always here, nosing in. He says "cut on in, be aggressive, be confident." I found out... Casanova. Love consultant. Specialist in lust and breaking hearts. Another salesman, hawking heaven. All his time is lost on the dimming star. I don't feel better, more connected. More in touch with her now! "Forget your heart. Here's another lesson, Get out, tear it out, rip it out, you'll find out..." Casanova. Love consultant. Specialist in lust and breaking hearts. Another salesman, hawking heaven. All his time is lost on the dimming star. ©2006 The Mines

Safe & Sound 03:36
lyrics by Ethan Nickerson music by The Mines This is a moment, I’ll give away Completely open, to what you say I’ve seen the ocean, I’ve felt the tide I won’t hold back, and I will not lie again... I’m done with safe and sound and ordinary My back is aching from the load I carry So when I don’t know who to be, And I don’t know where I am My purpose will unfold for me, In a song that never ends The root of darkness, it continues on It grows in shadows, and lives on wrong But in my heart there’s, a hope to carry on The world grows dim around me The loud sounds fade to soft... And then I’m gone... I’m done with safe and sound and ordinary My back is aching from the load I carry So when I don’t know who to be, And I don’t know where I am My purpose will take hold of me In a song that never ends ‘Cause so far behind my eyes is He So deep within my soul, A place that man will never see That the winds cannot control And still I’m aching for my home, my life Beyond the stars beyond the dark, of night To feast my eyes upon the soul of light Until then dreams will be my hope, my sight

The Beach 04:01
lyrics by Greg Lockwood music by The Mines Between the toes. Sandy beaches. Running unaware. Stop and catch a breath, to taste the breezes. Blue sky overhead. It must have been a mile, more maybe, Before I realized I was running. Now with the tide approaching, thoughts are gathering in. A feeling of all around, Forces, formless and fluid. Echoing off disappointment. It occurs to me now I don't want to leave. The starry night is fast approaching. This condition leaves me short of knowing. I want to pour it out to the wind that's blowing. Hear those words I need to hear. A picture, a light on the future, An outline, the path I'll be walking. The failures, the hopes, remove all the doubt, clear all confusion. The Waves, the wind, the dancing of laughter, further down the beach. The grip of the hand I was holding... released. I need love that goes deeper than the ocean, so let it fall on me and land on me like rain. I need love that goes deeper than emotion, so let it carry me in ways I can't explain.

The Dawn 04:18
lyrics by Ethan Nickerson music by The Mines Can I be here, facing the dawn when I go home; Behind me, the ground disappears, each step of the way... The sand on my feet, the breath of my father leads me on; I dreamed of that harbor once, but I couldn't stay... And I'm drawn on to find You, And there's more ground before me, And it's for this that I live. The more that I move, the less that I want to find the end; My scales begin to fall, like waves on the sea... There's nothing to prove, and nothing requires me to pretend; The boundaries weren't there at all, so who can I be? And I'm drawn on to find You, And there's more ground before me, And it's for this that I live. I'll trade you sway for sway, the night before the day, the dawn's silhouette; The breaking, the light bleeds in, as the curtain is torn. You made us soul for soul, and threw the clock away, and I feel the debt; And all this, to sing to me, so that I am reborn. And I'm drawn on to find You, And Your voice carries me, And it's for this that I live.

about

The Mines' singular and inventive rock has an infectious and rhythmic quality that matches the best indie-rock has to offer, only with a spiritual component.

The Grand Rapids Press...

Grand Rapids band The Mines has put out a full-length CD that any rock lover would like. The music fits well with the great vocals and there's great songwriting throughout. Particular standouts here are Safe & Sound and the insightful What It Means. And the two bonus tracks, The Beach and The Dawn, are no mere afterthoughts; they're as good as any other song on the CD. So pack your bags and head to Metropolis. You'll listen to it more than once.

Revue Magazine

The Mines are a quartet of fine musicians and crafty songwriters. The two lead singers trade vocal and lyric-writing duties, resulting in this 13-song exploration of novel-like confessions and character portraits. The instrumentation is solidly played and expertly recorded. The record itself was actually completed by three of the Mines: Todd Hoek, Greg Lockwood and Ethan Nickerson. Troy Hatfield, a recent addition, will have to learn a long set of tasteful pop rock symphonies which draw from Jeff Buckley, Coldplay and everything in their CD collections.
