Undercover 03:17
It feels like I’ve been undercover. I’m worn like I’ve been hunted down. Faces frowning turn my way as I’m unbound. An ocean and a plane ride later. Looking back on a day, delivered... ah ah ah ah... Echoes ringing in my head the only sound. I’m picking up roses. They’re falling my way now. Somebody come carry them away. It feels like I’ve been uncovered. It’s hot like I’m nearing overload. ah ah ah ah... With everything around I feel I’m ready to explode. I’m picking up roses. They’re falling my way now. Somebody come carry them away. Mind spinning in circles, Awaiting the day, Somebody come carry them away. Knock out a window I’m out a back door Make believing I’m picking up roses. They’re falling my way now. Somebody come carry them away. Mind spinning in circles, Fearing the let down! Somebody come carry me away.

Atlantis 04:23
Here in the dark where I was born, I followed the moon around the curve of the earth, Encountering nations as they mourn, All begging to finally see the dawn giving birth. Futures are burning in the streets, Smoke has been pouring in the skies for so long, Devouring everything it eats, The flames have been feeding on the sickness and the wrong, And nobody knows who made the fires, But we all stayed here long enough to watch ‘em grow Wiping the ashes from our eyes, We wake to a world the peels the life, from the soul There’s something I can’t see, I think it’s bigger than me, I think it’s way too big to show, Still my biggest fear, is… How much I love it here, I think I’m too afraid to go… Picking the pieces off the ground, Searching the streets to find a place that still stands, Faces are aging all around, People are trying to wipe the blood off their hands, Still nobody knows who made the fires, But we stood around here long enough to watch ‘em grow, What if the rain could finally fall, And even the least becomes a priest to heal the whole. There’s something I can’t see, I think it’s bigger than me, I think it’s way too big to show, Still my biggest fear, is… How much I love it here, I think I’m too afraid to go… Cause this is not my home, But still it’s all I’ve known, Sometimes it’s all I think I know. I swear a man can change, Cause there is something strange, That I can feel beneath my soul…

Fire 02:54
Fire in the eyes, give it away. His is in disguise, the blue-ing flame. Staring at a suitcase left un-shut. Grasping at assurance, holding none. Didn’t he, didn’t she, didn’t they know? Couldn’t he? Wouldn’t she? oh no no no no no no no Movement of the stars & of the earth, The constant pulsing motion of the surf. A mounting force of tension all around, Buries in the rush of shifting ground. Couldn’t we, shouldn’t we, let it go? Will it be, killing me, let it go? Fire in the eyes, it fades away. Masterful disguises, they decay. The energy of motion slowing down, Wearing down, down... down... down...

about

In People Music, The Mines have compiled a short-length album that expresses a genuine self-reflection of who they are, and what they long to eventually be. Whether it's through a story in the U2-like epic, "Run Home," or the conflict-filled opener, "Valley," the craving of simply understanding life is present throughout. It is clearly evident in the mesmerizing ballad, "Atlantis." Bassist/Singer Ethan Nickerson sings, "Cause this is not my home, still it's all I've known. Sometimes it's all I think I know. I swear a man can change, cause there is something strange that I can feel beneath my soul."

The inner journey doesn't end there. The album concludes with one final exhale, the delicate lament, "Grace." Here, the listener finds themselves amidst a crescendo of dreamy atmospherics, feeling that ‘everything's going to be alright.’ People Music, from beginning to end, is laced with tight harmonies, lyrical depth and just plain awe-inspiring beauty. The emotion, and honesty, is truly infectious. This EP is assured to please the indie/pop/rock lover's ear.

Revue Magazine

From the stabbing guitar feedback that sets its navigational course to the ethereal reflection pool at its final destination, Grand Rapids rock quartet The Mines’ second release is indicative of the journey behind the mellowing and maturation of the songcraft which they brought to the fore with their first release, Metropolis (2006). Lyrical portraiture and textural mid-tempo rock music create the basis for the effort, leaving plenty of sonic space in a genre fraught with busy-ness and exaggerated pop-rock instrumentation. A slight foray into odd-meter on the penultimate track augments the collection of straightforward songs.
